Ether is the basic substance that composes everything in existence - whether it is living or not. In its purest form, it is incorporeal, but is capable of being channeled through physical objects, such as bodies.
There are two methods of using Ether, both of which are equal in power and are more effective depending on what purpose they’re utilized for.

- Physical actions. The Ether already within an object is used to manipulate or alter it.
- Easier to do, but difficult to master.
- To truly master Physical, one needs precision, coordination of their own body, and considerable forethought.
- Example: A fiery punch. A less expected example - healing someone via a series of massages to stimulate their Ether to recover their bodies.
- Transformation is a vital basic of Physical. It involves the alteration of objects into different objects.
- Called Ether for short. External Ether is applied to something else.
- Difficult to do consistently and to learn how to do.
- Powered by the user's thoughts and feelings.
- Requires a strong will and drive to use effectively.
- Example: Healing someone by blasting them with your own Ether.
- Kinesis is a vital basic of Ether. It involves the manipulation of objects using (pure) Ether alone. Think telekinesis.
In summary, the two major distinctions between Physical and Ether are manipulating the Ether within physical objects and manipulating pure, unbridled Ether, disconnected from any physical vessel. The easy way of putting it is that Physical is generally used by some kind of motion with the body, whilst Ether only requires mere thought to activate.
However, the line between the two can sometimes be difficult to draw. Technically speaking, every ability could fall under Physical and Ether. Thus, abilities are classified by which one they fall under the most. Abilities are only rarely classified as both.
One peculiar example are conjuration abilities, which involve the creation of new physical objects. The process of these abilities begins with pure Ether. Once that Ether is molded into the most basic physical form (a crystal), it must be refined into more complex shapes via Physical, which can now be used to manipulate the Ether within it.

Pure Ether without a true physical vessel is capable of taking two visible forms - that of light and that of a crystal. Crystals are essentially compressed Ether, and are very common in nature.
Abilities are the various supernatural actions that those in Elan are able to perform.
There are three types of abilities.
- Damaging - Abilities that cause destruction or damage something.
- Support - Abilities that aid or enhance the quality of something. Example: An ability to make one’s muscles able to lift heavier objects.
- Debiltator - Abilities used to debilitate or lower the quality of something. Example: An ability that will temporarily blind someone.
Innates are passive abilities that do not need to be consciously used. Their effects are either constantly occurring without any prompting, or must be triggered in specific situations.
- "Always On" Example: A talent that slowly heals any wounds.
- Situational Example: A talent that increases one's Physical strength if they are struck by a Ether-based ability.
